Lauded in song and verse, Bantry Bay is famous for its stunning beauty. Situated in the idyllic south-west of Ireland and washed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, this tourist's paradise is a wonderful mixture of high mountain and deep sea, of rugged remoteness and chic cosmopolitanism, of traditional warmth and modern convenience.

Situated at the head of Bantry Bay is the vibrant market town of Bantry. A popular tourist destination since the nineteenth century, the town is also the proud inheritor of a long maritime culture and history that today finds expression in the thriving mariculture industry that is one of the region's great success stories of the past twenty years.

From humble beginnings in the mussel pots that began to appear in the bay in the early 1980s, this industry has grown to become Ireland's premier supplier and exporter of luxury convenience seafood for both the home and ever-expanding markets worldwide.

Started in the late 1980s, Bantry Mussel Fair seeks to reflect and promote this growing industry and to promote the tourist industry in West Cork. Now in its 16th year, the Fair remains West Cork's foremost family festival, featuring its now familiar and highly popular mix of exciting open-air music, street entertainment, culinary events, children's events and lashings of craic - not to mention the mussels!
