Event to remember the late Gerry Whelan

A weekend of music sessions with local and visiting musicians.
Music workshops on Banjo, Fiddle and Accordion,
Singing and Storytelling,
Memorial concert with Guest Artists Peter Horan and Gerry Harrington; Gerry Fiddle OConnor and Cathal McConnell; Angelina Carberry and Martin Quinn, Geraldine Bradley Singer,
Seamus Fay Lilter, supported by Ring of Gullion CCE and local musicians. All Ireland Marching Bands Parade and Open Air Sessions.

The Gerry Whelan event started on July 8, 2005, with a memorial concert, organised by Martin Donohoe and the NYAH group, where musicians and friends of the late Gerry Whelan gathered to pay tribute to one of the true friends of music, musicians and music lovers. Since then it has become a weekend event, and has grown from strength to strength.

Friday 19th September
7.30pm St. Michaels Church
Mass for Deceased members of Cootehill CCE

9.30pm - Mullens
Official Opening and Traditional Session
Official Opening by John Molloy (Chairman Cootehill CCE)
Session with special guests from Leitrim: Dave Sheridan Flute, Pairic Mc Govern Pipes, Donal Reilly Accordion, John Mc Cartin Guitar joined by local musicians.

Saturday 20th September
11am to 2pm Music Workshops in St. Michaels Hall
Accordion workshop with Martin Quinn
Banjo workshop with Angelina Carberry
Fiddle workshop Gerry O'Connor

3pm - Don Smiths
Ulster Singing / Storytelling Session
Geraldine Bradley - traditional singer in Irish and English.
Mick Quinn Mullaghbawn Traditional singer and storyteller.
Cathal McConnell from the Boys of the Lough - traditional singer and collector, with a large repertoire of Ulster songs.

The afternoon will finish with a traditional session with some musician friends from Ulster playing a few tunes.

Saturday Night: Memorial Concert
8.30pm - Drumlin Theatre
With welcome address by Comhaltas President, Jim Teevan and special guests: Angelina Carberry Banjo and Martin Quinn Accordion, Peter Horan Flute and Gerry Harrington Fiddle, Cathal McConnell (from the Boys of the Lough) Flute and Gerry 'Fiddle' O'Connor, Geraldine Bradley Singer, Seamus Fay Lilter, supported by Ring of Gullion CCE and local musicians.

10.30pm Traditional Sessions in:
Mullens, Don Smiths, Hannigans, Bannons and Fergus Donaghues with Guest artists from concert and musicians from Cootehill, Cavan, Monaghan, Louth, Meath, Armagh and Down.

Sunday 21st September
12.30pm - Laying of Wreath at Gerrys Grave for deceased members of Cootehill CCE with piper Patrick Martin

Sunday Afternoon - celebrations take to the streets with:
2.30pm - Marching Band Parade:
Winning All Ireland Marching Bands will parade with their Gerald Whelan Memorial trophies.

3.30pm - Open air afternoon session:
Session for young and old with Patrick Martin Flute / Pipes, Ceoltoiri Drumlin, Cunningham and Brady families and musicians from Cootehill, Cavan, Monaghan, Louth, Armagh and Down.

7pm - Mullens
Closing Session
Sean McCague and Laura Beagon from Monaghan will perform the closing session for the weekend. All Musicians welcome.
